MODEST Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola was keen to deflect any praise onto his players after the Catalan giants capped a remarkable year by winning the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi tonight.
Lionel Messi's extra-time strike earned Barca a 2-1 win over Estudiantes in Abu Dhabi and means Guardiola's troops now hold all six titles they have competed for this year.
It has been remarkable period for Barca and not least for Guardiola, who only took the reins 18 months ago, but rather than take the credit for himself, the coach preferred to hail the contributions made by his team.
"For me this was a great year. We have achieved something that no-one has achieved before," said Guardiola, who was in tears following the final whistle.
"I'm lucky that I have such quality players in my squad. The success that we've had has been down to them and I'd like to thank them for that.
"I also want to remember all the players that were with us last season, because they also form part of this," added Guardiola, referring to the likes of Samuel Eto'o, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Sylvinho.
"To win six successive titles is unthinkable. So many things contributed to it; having few injuries, a squad made up of players who play because they like to, mental strength...
"Everyone should be happy and congratulations to the club and everybody associated with Barca.
"We've had the best year in the history of the club."
Barca went into the match looking to complete a remarkable set, having won an unprecedented treble of Primera Division, Champions League and Copa del Rey last season before adding the European and Spanish Super Cups in August.
Copa Libertadores champions Estudiantes looked poised to gatecrash the party though as they took a 37th-minute lead through Mauro Boselli and held that advantage until the 89th minute.
However, Barca substitute Pedro Rodriguez, fresh from his record-breaking goal in the semi-final win over Atlante when he became the first player in history to score in six different competitions in the same year, headed home an equaliser to send the game to extra time.
Buoyed by that late goal, Barca continued to boss the game in the added half-hour and they capitalised on their dominance by scoring what turned out to be the winner in the 110th minute.
Messi was the goalscorer, chesting in Dani Alves' cross, and it was fitting that he should be the match-winner as on Monday he could add the FIFA World Player of the Year award to the Ballon d'Or crown he already holds.
Pedro said after the game: "I was fortunate enough to score and also win the title. We hope that our good form continues."
Estudiantes coach Alejandro Sabella added: "The result was fair.
"We were close to achieving our dream but at the end of the day, we failed. But the players did a perfect job today. We gave it our all.
"It would have been great to take the cup home, but this is football and we lost with our heads held high."
