Gullit – who had taken a 22-hour plane journey from LA via China to arrive in Sydney this morning – said today: “America has huge potential. I think it's 300 million people so there is something going on.

"I'm interested in making football something it can be.”

Quizzed on whether this will include “sexy football” - a phrase coined by the Dutchman a decade ago – he replied with a smile.

“That phrase has followed me for 15 years," he said. "Sometimes you can do tricks but also you need to play for the team.

“I'll be using this game to see players and see how the side can develop. It's an opportunity for me.

“I've seen video of the players but it's different to seeing them in person playing live. I'll use these two matches to assess the possibilities of the team.”

Galaxy plays A-League side Wellington Phoenix next Saturday in New Zealand to conclude their two-game Australasian tour.

Gullit – a former legend of the Dutch game and one-time manager of Chelsea and Newcastle United in the Premiership – said he knew little about the A-League.

“For me it's the first time I've been to Australia," he added. "They did already well with the World Cup, but the same thing has happened in America.”

Galaxy striker Landon Donovan added that although he would've liked to have been relaxing on a beach at the end of the season, “...it's still an awesome trip to come on.”

Donovan last played here in 2000 for the US in the Olympics. He was also part of the US team knocked out by Australia in the 1999 World U/17 semi finals played in New Zealand, which featured A-League stars Jade North and Lucas Pantelis as well as Socceroo hotshot Scott McDonald.
