VPL WRAP: Green Gully and Bentleigh Greens both showed they deserve a finals spot in a crowded top half of the table, while St Albans’ and Springvale’s relegation was confirmed.
Victorian Training Centre 0
Hume City 1 (Richard Cardozo)
@ White Eagles Stadium
HUME City extended its lead atop the league to six points after a scrappy 1-0 win over Victorian Training Centre.
Forward Richard Cardozo was on the scoresheet once again, putting away his 16th goal of the season early in the contest.
Blustery conditions made it tough for players but City held on to open up a two-win gap on second-placed Oakleigh.
Melbourne Knights 1 (Kayne Vincent)
Heidelberg United 1 (Saso Alexovski)
@ Knights Stadium
KAYNE Vincent’s 74th-minute strike earned the Melbourne Knights a 1-1 draw with Heidelberg United.
Still chasing a top five spot, the Knights secured a point with Vincent scoring his first goal for the club after coming off the bench.
The home side had dominated possession but failed to break down United until their late equaliser.
Earlier, Saso Alexovski had given Heidelberg a fifth-minute lead when he volleyed in at the back post after a cross from right-winger Hamlet Armenian.
The Knights are eight points from the top five while Heidelberg, who sit fourth, are equal on points with sixth-placed Bentleigh.
Northcote City 0
Green Gully Cavaliers 4 (Stephen Downes, Graham Hockless, Mathew Sanders, Jason Hayne)
@ John Cain Memorial Park
GREEN Gully handed Northcote City a 4-0 belting in an impressive display that moved them back into the top five.
The Cavaliers struck twice in each half against their fellow finals aspirants to move into fifth.
Midfield duo Stephen Downes and Graham Hockless scored twice in the space of three minutes just after the half-hour mark before Gully sealed the points in the second half.
Forward Mathew Sanders pounced when Northcote failed to clear in the area and Jason Hayne added the finishing touches soon after.
Northcote have lost three of their last four and are now four points adrift of a finals spot.
Dandenong Thunder 2 (Shane Rexhepi, Luke Sherbon)
Springvale White Eagles 1 (Goran Zoric)
@ George Andrews Reserve
DANDENONG Thunder ended a five-match winless run with a 2-1 win over the relegated Springvale White Eagles.
It was some redemption for their loss to Springvale in round 6 of the Mirabella Cup during the week as midfielder Luke Sherbon struck a second-half winner.
Thunder defender Shane Rexhepi and White Eagles attacker Goran Zoric had exchanged goals in the first half.
The loss marked a seventh-straight in the league for the White Eagles and their relegation back to State League One has been confirmed.
Hume City 1 (Zoran Petrevski)
Bentleigh Greens 2 (Ryan De Vries (2))
@ Broadmeadows Valley Park
BENTLEIGH ended Hume City’s 11-match unbeaten run with an upset 2-1 win.
The Greens were the last team to beat Hume, that a 4-1 belting on April 8, and a brace from Ryan De Vries helped them to victory away from home.
De Vries struck on 21 minutes and the Greens could have been two goals to the good at the break if not for Hume goalkeeper Lupce Acevski, who saved his second penalty in as many weeks.
De Vries added his second in the second half and although Hume forward Zoran Petrevski pulled one back for the hosts, the Greens held on for a vital win.
Hume stay six points clear at the top, but Oakleigh have a game in hand, while Bentleigh keep up hopes of snatching a finals spot.
Richmond 1 (Ross Antoniadis)
South Melbourne 0
@ Kevin Bartlett Reserve
RICHMOND kept their hopes of playing finals football alive after a 1-0 win over South Melbourne.
An early goal from Ross Antoniadis was enough to give the Eagles the points against a growingly inconsistent South outfit.
South’s last four outings have gone loss-win-loss-win but they remain in third spot despite Antoniadis’ winner.
Richmond are six points from a finals spot.
