Two goals from Shaun Wright-Phillips and others from Salomon Kalou and Didier Drogba - his 31st of the season - helped Chelsea to cut Manchester United's lead at the top of the Barclays Premiership to three points.

But at the opposite end of the table, West Ham remain five points adrift of safety with just four matches to play.

Alan Curbishley's side have now targeted victories in their next three games against Everton, Wigan and Bolton before facing title favourites Manchester United on the final day of the season.

Defender James Collins said: "The manager has said to us that we need to win three out of our last four games if we have any chance of staying up and it will be a tall order.

"We have got to believe we can do it, otherwise there is no point in playing. We have got to put the Chelsea defeat behind us because we have a massive game against Everton on Saturday.

"It is tough for us having to play Manchester United in the final game of the season so everyone is geared up for trying to win the next three before that.

"I know the result didn't show it against Chelsea, but if we go out and show the same kind of effort and commitment, I am sure we can get another win under our belts."

West Ham looked capable of getting at least a share of the spoils in the opening half against Chelsea.

They briefly hauled themselves level when Carlos Tevez cancelled out Chelsea's opener from Wright-Phillips.

But parity lasted just 31 seconds before the England winger scored his second to put Chelsea in control and end West Ham's resistance.

Collins said: "The second goal from Shaun Wright-Phillips killed us off and everyone was really disappointed in the dressing room.

"I thought we were the better team in the first half and the players could not believe we were beaten 4-1."
