Speaking to 442FM before Ange Postecoglou confirmed his shock exit, Kerr believes there is a different skill set needed to coach the Matildas compared with the Socceroos.

Stajcic, 44, has taken the Matildas to a new world-beating level since moving from the Sydney FC women's team to take control of the national side in 2014.

He's currently on an unbeaten run of six games after a hat-trick of wins over Brazil on the back of victories over Japan and the USA plus their latest win against China last night, scoring a total of 19 while conceding just six.

"We don't want to lose him," said lethal striker Kerr last month. "I'm not too familiar with how the men's team works – I know it's a lot different from what I've heard.

"I think he's a really good coach. I think the men's game is a little bit different – I don't think you can man-mark like how we play.

"I don't want to lose Staj because we are on a bit of a run at the moment so we'll keep him..."

Sam, 24, who scored twice again last night, including a netbusting rocket of a strike, paid tribute to the style of management Stajcic has brought to the Matildas compared to previous long-term coach, Tom Sermanni.

"We know we're fierce," she said. "We know we're a really good team, but Staj has always said, 'Let your flair show through' and we really take that from the South Americans – the Brazilians play like they're in the backyard.

"We're a very structured team but Staj allows us to be who we are. A lot of teams don't have both – they either have one or the other."

Kerr – who has been in the running for World Women's Player of the Year, AFC Player of the Year and now also CONCACAF Female Player of the Year – added: "There's so many different personalites and as a team off-the-field, we are so close.

"I know in the men's game, they don't spend as much time with each other as we do, and I think that works in our favour.

"I think Staj has done a really good job. It is hard keeping 20 girls all happy – and sometimes he doesn't keep us all happy – but he makes us perform on the field and that's the most important part.

"Tom was less structured – he was all about go out there, play, be yourself and do you, which everyone loved. He was a great manager off the field. He's an awesome guy.

"But I think as the game progresses, and the women's game especially, we just required more physicality, and Staj is very big on fitness. He just has that very Aussie Never Say Die attitude and I think he's brought that into our team.

"We're just a lot more structured. Staj makes sure that everyone on the field knows everyone's jonb in any position and that's really unique.

"If I had to play centreback for the Matildas tomorrow, I could...not that I would like to!"
