Kewell was hoping to re-ignite his stalled club career with the Qatari club, who brought him in as cover when their other Australian signing, Mark Bresciano, injured his knee in the 2-2 draw with Oman in Sydney.

The former Leeds, Liverpool, Galatasaray and Melbourne Victory star played three games in the Qatar Stars League scoring a goal in the 2-0 win over Qatar SC.

But Bresciano has now returned to full fitness and with Kewell only on a six-week contract, he has been released and has returned to England.

He is now in a search for a new club, but he is unlikely to have secures enough game time to figure in Holger Osieck's plans for the World Cup qualifiers in June.
