EXCLUSIVE: U16s player Chris Boland had his dreams come spectacularly true when his team’s party was crashed by Harry Kewell at last night’s Football Australia Awards.
To see behind the scenes at the awards...
Abbott and his Lilli Pilli FC U16A teammates were handed the prestigious team of the year gong at last night's lavish bash at Sydney's Hilton Hotel.
As the teens received their awards at the AFA media centre outside the ballroom, the Socceroo talisman exited the awards ceremony to make a surprise beeline for them and greet the gobsmacked youngsters.
It was a moment to savour, particularly when Kewell sought out the team's left winger Boland give him a big hug.
"It was amazing, a good bloke. It meant a lot to me," a stunned Boland said later.
Team captain Ned Stelzer described his side as "good sports who play in good spirits". He added that being at the same awards ceremony as the Socceroos was a surreal experience.
"It's amazing. You always dream about it, I suppose," he said.
The Sutherland Shire based team won the gong after a stellar season saw them crowned minor Premiers of their league in 2008, Major Premiers and NSW Champion of Champions.
They are also known for their good sportsmanship. But more than that, the lads have displayed a social conscience that's to be admired.
Over the last season they helped raise funds in order to donate football equipment to under-privileged children in Fiji and South Africa.
