Kewell's first step back to match action was a reserves match against Newcastle United's back-up boys last night.

And Kewell showed he'd lost none of this touch despite months in the treatment room with a trademark wonder goal.

He played for 45 minutes in front of a huge 3000+ crowd for a reserves match and scored a cracking header in the first half to help his side to a 2-1 win.

Within minutes of the start of the match, Kewell came close to opening the scoring when he unleashed a scorching shot from 25 metres that forced a great save to tip it round the post.

Kewell nearly set up another when he gave the Warrington crowd a cameo of what Liverpool's senior side have been missing in his absence.

He raced on to a superb throw out by David Martin, turned his marker before releasing a through ball to Craig Lindfield - but the young forward was caught offside.

The pressure continued to mount and when Liverpool won a corner from a deflected shot, Kewell finally made the breakthrough.

Sebastian Leto delivered from the right allowing Kewell to rise majestically and thump an unstoppable header into the top corner.

It was a glorious return to form for the injury-plagued Socceroo since suffering chronic groin and thigh injuries in pre-season that have kept him out of Liverpool's Premiership campaign.

Now gaffer Rafa Benitez will be hoping to bring him into the reckoning as Liverpool aim to rediscover their early season form- and hope Kewell can lead them out of their troubled Champions League position.
