The club announced their intention to appoint an administrator on Monday at a Court of Session in Edinburgh and on Wednesday the move was confirmed by the SPL.

Accountancy firm BDO have reportedly been appointed as the club's adminstrator, the same company that dealt with the liquidation of Rangers oldco in 2012.

The SPL confirmed that the Tynecastle outfit will start the season on minus 15 points, while they will also be unable to register players for the duration of their time in administration

An spokesperson for the league's governing body said in a statement: "As Heart of Midlothian is subject to an Insolvency Event, a 15 point deduction will be applied to its total points in the League Championship for next season, 2013-14. 

"In addition, Heart of Midlothian is subject to an embargo on Registering Players with the SPL while in administration.”

Hearts finished in 10th position in the 2012-13 season, amassing 44 points overall.
