EXCLUSIVE: She’s set for her 100th cap but the Matildas’ Danish-based star Heather Garriock says beating nemesis USA today in the US will be the real cause for celebrations.

“It’s going to be a great occasion. In saying that, I haven’t really thought too much about the 100th cap. I’m just focused on creating history by beating the Yanks, to be honest,” the 25-year-old wingback said today.
Australia are yet to defeat the United States in 18 encounters losing 16 of those matches, however there have been two draws in the last three meetings between the two nations.
“And the team is looking forward to the challenge as well. The motivation to beat the Yanks is always there, especially with them [the US] coming off an Algarve Cup win.”
At 25, Garriock is on track to break the current record holder Cheryl Salisbury, who has over 130 caps. Garriock could potentially go on to be the most capped ever Australian national team player.
“It sounds nice but I don’t about being the greatest ever Matilda,” she said.
"It's a great honour and I believe I am the youngest male or female to get 100 caps so that is something I am proud of."
Asked if she could make it to 200 caps she said, “I’m sure it’s not out of the question. But let’s see how the body holds up.
"But I’m fit as a fiddle and raring to go. I don’t have any set goal for caps, I just take each game as it comes. I don’t take things for granted."
As for memories, Garriock recalls her first ever goal for the Matildas. Against China at the SFS in 2000, the then 16-year-old coolly slotted home off a through ball to equalize the game at 1-1.
Although Australia lost the friendly on penalties, that moment sticks in her mind as the one big memory of her 100 caps.
Meanwhile Garriock faces a nightmare international flight schedule over the next ten days. After flying in from Denmark for today’s game in North Carolina, shewill fly back to Denmark where she will play for her club in the Danish Cup Final on 1 May before returning to the USA for the Matildas second match against the USA on 3 May.
Garriock has been in red hot form for her club Fortuna Hjorring, where she’s scored a goal a game since arriving two months ago. “The club’s fairly happy with me and it’s been the best thing for my football career. It’s helped me mentally and physically.”
