NPL Victoria (NPLV) leaders Heidelberg United are “as tough as any A-League club” according to Perth Glory’s Chris Harold ahead of their FFA Cup clash on Tuesday night.
Glory will face the Bergers at Olympic Village but know the threat their opposition possess, sitting three points clear in the NPLV following a 4-2 win over third-placed Bentleigh Greens on Friday.
Perth have a proud history in the FFA Cup, reaching two finals, and given their geographical challenges, like to use the competition as their pre-season for the A-League.
Heidelberg reached the 2015 FFA Cup quarter-finals, when they signed ex-Greece international Kostas Katsouranis.
Glory might be fancied to progress but Harold said drawing Heidelberg was a dangerous task.
“I personally feel this is as tough a challenge as if we had to play an A-League team in the first round because they’re obviously pretty deep into their season so they’ll be fit and they’re top of probably the strongest NPL competition in Australia,” Harold told FourFourTwo.
“You hear bits and pieces about various NPL clubs over the country and they’re definitely one of the clubs you hear more about than others. Being top in the NPLV is no mean feat.
“I’m sure they’re going to be pretty tough. We’re pretty mentally prepared to expect that but at the same time we expect to win and should win.”

Glory’s pre-season has only just begun, having played two friendly matches ahead of the Round of 32 encounter.
Perth defeated Perth SC 3-0 last week, after a poor opening 3-1 loss to Inglewood United.
“The game against Perth was a big step forward, not only on the scoreline,” Harol said.
“We look like a more cohesive unit. The nature of the A-League, there’s always a high turnover of players, so you have a few new faces come in and you need to get used to how each other play.
“The other night we looked like we’d been playing together for a lot longer than we had which was a good thing.”
Glory have made four signings this off-season with ex-Liverpool junior Jake Brimmer this week joining Scott Neville, Jacob Poscoliero and Mitch Nichols.
