Heidelberg United are hoping for another bumper crowd when they take on A-League side Perth Glory in the FFA Cup on Tuesday.
NPL Victoria side Heidelberg were drawn against Glory for the Round of 32, taking on the A-League outfit at Olympic Village on August 1.
Heidelberg drew a massive crowd of over 11,000 two years ago when they hosted Melbourne City in the quarter-finals, and they are hoping for more of the same on Tuesday – except for the result.
"This is a replica of the Melbourne City game at home, we were able to draw 11 and a half thousand," Heidelberg coach George Katsakis told FFATV.
"And that's what we're looking forward to no doubt. The pressure will be on us to try and get a result knowing the fact we’re up against an A-League club but nevertheless we are battlers, we'll give it a challenge and I'm sure equal pressure will be on them as well."
Only three times in FFA Cup history has a state league side defeated an A-League team, with both Central Coast Mariners and Adelaide United knocked out of the competition by Green Gully and Redlands United respectively in 2016, and Western Sydney Wanderers by Adelaide City in 2014.
All of those defeats came in the Round of 32, with A-League clubs only having just started their pre-season by that stage, and state league sides in the middle of their respective campaigns.
Katsakis believes there is no better time to draw an A-League club, and there is no reason why Heidelberg can't take the game to the Glory.
"It's a great draw for us," he said. "To coach against someone like Kenny Lowe will be a great benefit for Victorian football, in particular grassroots football and for the magic of the Cup. We're excited.
"If you're about to get an A-League team this is the time to you want to get them. They're probably a little bit underdone but we're gonna do some homework and make sure we're well-drilled for it."
