Heidelberg United president Steve Tsalikidis says the recent partnership with Japanese based Soltilo Familia Soccer School has capped off a big fortnight for the club.
It was announced on Thursday the NPLVIC giants had formed a new partnership with Soltilo Familia Soccer School, which was founded by Japanese star Keisuke Honda.
It includes $500,000 AUD in funds and the construction of a new synthetic pitch, but the current field at Olympic Village will not be touched.
Tsalikidis said the money would be purely used to improve environments and facilities.
Heidelberg are also planning to approach Victoria’s Minister for Sport John Eren for support in the near future.
“This area lacks facilities and that’s why we’ve been lobbying council and government over the past four years to get this master plan up,” he said.
“It’s a $10m master plan, fully approved by council and they’ve allocated $3.1m. We’ve got to contribute as well and fundraising through our corporate partners.
“It’s not a dream, it’s something that has to happen and we need to leave another legacy behind like the Heidelberg people did 20-30 years ago and we will do it and this is probably the start of it.”
Tsalikidis also hoped the partnership would attract many Japanese players to come to Heidelberg and vice-versa.
He agreed that it capped off a big fortnight for the club after they defeated Perth Glory 1-0 at Olympic Village in the FFA Cup Round of 32 a fortnight ago.
The Bergers are currently first on the table in NPLVIC and are striving to win as many trophies as they can this season after falling in last year's semi-final.
Heidelberg’s rival South Melbourne have been pushing to break into the A-League in the past year, but president Tsalikidis said their vision was no driving force for them to raise standards.
“We’ve been doing this way before they even thought about things they’re doing and with all due respect to South Melbourne or any club, we wish them all the best,” Tsalikidis.
“We worry about what we can control and that’s what happens at the Village. Any clubs that aspire to do whatever they want, they’ve got their own management team, own vision.
“Our actual philosophy, blueprint, master plan and vision hasn’t happened in a day. This has been close to two years in the making and the master plan itself has been four years in the making.”
Heidelberg take on Sydney United away in the FFA Cup Round of 16 on August 23.
