Dane Richards put the Red Bulls ahead on the stroke of half-time with former Arsenal and Barcelona forward Henry adding the second in the 63rd minute.

The Crew had earlier been held to a goalless draw by FC Dallas while third-placed Toronto FC failed to make up ground as they also drew 0-0 against Real Salt Lake.

Salt Lake's draw meant they failed to capitalise on Western Conference leaders LA Galaxy losing 2-0 to Kansas City Wizards, David Arnaud and Jimmy Conrad getting the goals.

The Colorado Rapids strolled to a 3-0 win over the 10-man Houston Dynamos.

Jamie Smith had put the Rapids ahead before Houston had Lovel Palmer sent off in just the 10th minute. Further goals from Omar Cummings (16) and Conor Casey (23) sealed the win.

The Philadelphia Union came from a goal down to win 2-1 against 10-man New England Revolution.

Ilija Stolica had put the Revolution ahead but the sending off of Cory Gibbs in the 41st minute changed the game as late goals from substitutes Jack McInerney and Justin Mapp gave Philadelphia the win.

The day's other game saw Seattle Sounders beat Chicago Fire 2-1.

Chicago had led through Josh Thorrington's 28th minute penalty but Freddy Montero levelled eight minutes later and struck the winner in stoppage time.
