The 27-year-old walked out on Perth Glory in late July only a few months after signing with his hometown club and has been on the lookout for a new home since.

At the time, Glory cited family reasons, with Herd understood to have relocation issues with his English wife Amii and two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Hollie.

Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh said he was delighted with the signing of the defender/midfielder, who has three Australia caps.

“Chris’s versatility will be a big boost for us given the relentless nature of the Sky Bet League One season, and I know fans will love his energy and work ethic," Edinburgh told the club website.

"He brings his Premier League and international experience into the dressing room, which is invaluable."

Gillingham is currently 12th in League One.
