Bayern had a torrid campaign under Louis van Gaal last term, failing to defend their Bundesliga title against eventual champions Borussia Dortmund.

Heynckes has reversed the fortunes of the side, however, with the German giants five points clear of Dortmund atop the league table.

Bayern also lead a Champions League group that contains Villarreal, Napoli and English Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Heading into Saturday's blockbuster clash against Dortmund, who defeated Bayern in both league encounters between the sides last season, Heynckes is buoyed by the knowledge that his side have become one of the best in Europe.

"We are playing against the reigning champion, are 5 points better and have the better goal difference," Heynckes said.

"Last year Bayern lost both games, but I think the situation now is different to last year. We have a good organized and well playing squad."

"We showed this season often magnificent football and that's why the situation is completely different than last year."

"Dortmund were dominant last year, played very good football and became worthy champions, but this year Bayern is a different team."
