Here PA Sport looks at Hiddink's nine failed efforts as a club and national team boss.

1996: ENGLAND 4 HOLLAND 1

A hiding for Hiddink at Wembley as hosts England finally hit their stride at Euro 96, producing one of their finest performances of all time. The 'SAS' strike partnership of Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham were in superb form while Paul Gascoigne, Paul Ince and Steve McManaman all excelled in midfield.

2002: SOUTH KOREA 1 ENGLAND 1

The Dutch coach was preparing the Koreans for their role as World Cup co-hosts and they would have drawn confidence from this result against Sven-Goran Eriksson's team. Michael Owen gave England the lead but Park Ji-Sung, now of Manchester United, equalised for Korea. Hiddink had the last laugh as his team exceeded all expectations by reaching the semi-finals, while England lost in the quarters to eventual winners Brazil.

2002: PSV EINDHOVEN 0 ARSENAL 4

Another humbling for Hiddink, this time in his second spell as PSV coach. Arsene Wenger got the better of him in this Champions League group stage clash, with the Gunners going in front inside 20 seconds through Gilberto.

2002: ARSENAL 0 PSV EINDHOVEN 0

The return match between the sides meant little to the Gunners, who were already assured of a place in the second group phase and fielded a reserve team. PSV still could not get the win they needed to avoid bottom spot in the group.

2004: PSV EINDHOVEN 1 NEWCASTLE 1

Hiddink's team led against English opposition for the first time when future Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman put PSV ahead in this UEFA Cup quarter-final, but Jermaine Jenas levelled on the stroke of half-time.

2004: NEWCASTLE 2 PSV EINDHOVEN 1

Shearer was on target against Hiddink for the third time in his career after his brace for England at Euro 96, but Kezman levelled the tie at 2-2 early in the second half. Sir Bobby Robson's side rallied though and won thanks to a Gary Speed header.

2004: ARSENAL 1 PSV EINDHOVEN 0

Arsenal again got the better of Hiddink's PSV as Brazilian defender Alex - now at Chelsea - scored an own goal. He got his revenge last season by dumping the Gunners out of the Champions League, incredibly after scoring another own goal earlier in the game.

2004: PSV EINDHOVEN 1 ARSENAL 1

Arsenal had Lauren and Patrick Vieira sent off but still Hiddink could not steer his side to a win. Thierry Henry cancelled out Andre Ooijer's early effort.

2008: ENGLAND 3 RUSSIA 0

Steve McClaren's team were full of confidence after a 3-0 win over Israel four days earlier and the Michael Owen-Emile Heskey partnership again blossomed, with the Newcastle man scoring twice in the first half. Rio Ferdinand added a late third as Hiddink's hopes of reaching Euro 2008 were dented.
