A double strike from Alexander Kerzhakov sealed the win to keep Hiddink's side within two points of Group E leaders Croatia in Euro 2008 qualifying.

"The whole team is happy with the result," said the Dutch coach.

"This victory is very important for our side and for the development of Russian football as a whole."

Russia made an uncertain start to the game with a series of errors putting them under pressure, but Hiddink was pleased with the way they recovered.

"The start of the game was very nervy and difficult," he said. "We committed mistakes in defence and could have conceded a goal whilst there was nothing going on at the other end.

"But after I made a few changes we were able to put our game in order, gain the advantage, stop making mistakes and in the end score two goals.

"I am satisfied with the result. I think it was one of the best games that Russia have played under my guidance."
