GUUS Hiddink is reportedly in line to swap one Russian assignment for another and take charge at Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea.
The Dutchman, whose contract as Russia chief expires at the end of Euro 2008, is in pole position to succeed under-fire Avram Grant.
The man who led the Socceroos to the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany continues to be a much sought after prize.
A source in Holland told the News of the World: “Guus Hiddink’s future as Russia coach is in doubt.
“Abramovich has put the block on his contract extension and those close to Guus reckon that will pave the way for him to take over at Chelsea.”
The Dutchman has been linked with Chelsea in the past and has remained close friends with Piet de Visser, his former head scout at PSV Eindhoven, who is now a personal assistant to Abramovich.
Grant will seek a meeting with Abramovich to discuss his future following the Champions League semi-final first leg with Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday.
The Israeli, who signed a £2.5million-a-year deal after taking over from Jose Mourinho in September, is likely to try and negotiate a £5m pay-off rather than stay at Chelsea in a backroom capacity, according to the English Sunday tabloid.
Abramovich could be left with an embarrassing situation if Grant wins the Premier League, the Champions League — or both.
