Hoddle believes that if the Liverpool midfielder plays, he would be unlikely to figure in Wednesday's match against Russia.

Gerrard may have to have a painkilling injection in order to feature in Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier at Wembley as he battles against a toe injury - and missed training today as he underwent further treatment.

Hoddle, England manager from 1996 to 1999, told BBC London 94.9: "I think as a manager you would say they are both tough games because of the pressure.

"But I think there is enough in the squad to beat Israel at home.

"Russia will be a tougher game - Guus Hiddink is tactically astute.

"If he plays on Saturday he probably won't be fit for Russia as the inflammation and swelling will probably come two or three days after the game.

"It's a tough call and one which managers get paid for - but I think we have enough in the locker to beat Israel without him."
