SOCCEROOS coach Holger Osieck has been quick to apologise for an off the record sexist slur that "women should shut up in public," saying it was meant as a funny remark.
Speaking from Melbourne airport today, Osieck acknowledged he had caused a stir with his comments made at Tuesday's post-match presser following the Socceroos 4-0 demolition of Jordan.
"Now I get some information that it obviously created waves and that was definitely not the intent and to everyone who may feel offended by that, I would offer a sincere apology," Osieck said.
Adding: "I don't know how it's been taken in public but definitely, it was off the record.
"It was more a funny remark and I saw the YouTube (clip of the incident) as well and I put on that I used it at home to tell my wife, because sometimes she was a little bit, let's say, too talkative.
"So it was nothing against any women or whatever. It's definitely a complete misunderstanding."
Osieck emphasised he did not believe his comments.
"Of course not. I mean, as I said, it was more meant as a joke to the journalist who asked me and there was no serious approach in it, 100 percent not.
"I mean I have a lot of respect to women and I have been married for a number of years and I'm still pretty happy with my wife so everything is okay."
The incident began while Osieck was speaking with Football Federation Australia (FFA) media operations manager Adam Mark following the Socceroos' triumph which saw them move within one win of qualifying for their third consecutive World Cup appearance .
Osieck told Mark light-heartedly: "You push me around like my wife," before going on to repeat a phrase in Latin to a journalist which he translated as "that's a very, very .... women should shut up in public."
But the coach later said he was referring to a Bible verse that women should not speak in churches.
He emphasised that the comment was not aimed at female organisers at Etihad Stadium as indicated in some media reports.
