SOCCEROOS Coach Holger Oscieck has taken the shine of his team’s morale boosting 4-0 win over Jordan last night and stirred up a sexist storm by saying “women should shut up in public”.
Osieck’s jaw-dropping gaffe was captured by media at the beginning of a post match interview which was meant to focus on Australia's commanding performance.
Instead the German kicked a a spectacular own-goal after being told where to sit by a Football Federation Australia (FFA) media operations manager Adam Mark.
In what can only be assumed was a poor attempt at light-hearted banter Osieck said: "You push me around like my wife."
As Osieck took his seat a journalist asked the coach whether he had a phrase that described the Socceroos' performance.
"No phrase tonight," Osieck said before repeating one in Latin. Asked to translate, he added: "That's a very, very .... women should shut up in public."
Some journalists were audibly shocked.
"I say it to my wife at home, it is a private one okay."
Unfortunately for the coach and the FFA, the embarrassing foot-in-mouth moment wasn't private for long.
"And you record that one as well?," Osieck said. "I am going to be the darling of all Australian wives."
The FFA has announced the coach will hold a doorstop media opportunity at Melbourne Airport later today.
In a game where women feature prominently as players and supporters it is yet another black eye for football’s gender relations.
In 2004 FIFA president Sepp Blatter was widely criticised when he suggested women players should "wear tighter shorts”.
