VETERAN striker Harry Kewell may still have a future with the Socceroos, despite his recent omission from Holger Osieck's squad for the final stage of the World Cup qualifying next month.
Head coach Osieck welcomes back captain Lucas Neill for the trio of matches against Japan (4 June), Jordan (11 June) and Iraq (18 June), yet there was no place for 34-year-old Kewell in the 26-man squad.
Neill returns after missing the 2-2 draw against Oman through suspension while Osieck has recalled striker Josh Kennedy following a long absence through injury.
Kewell, scorer of 16 goals in 55 appearances for his country, attempted to resurrect his career with an injury replacement spell at Qatari club Al Gharafa, but was released earlier this month having featured in only three matches.
Osieck has openly stressed the importance of his selections playing regular first-team football, which is the likely reason for the former Leeds, Liverpool, Galatasaray and Melbourne Victory striker's omission this time around.
"I had a chat with him and told him why I didn't select him," Osieck said on Thursday.
Osieck, however, remains adamant it isn't necessarily the end for the talented hit-man.
"He accepted it but the door is definitely not closed to him."
