SOCCEROOS Coach Holger Osieck has urged Australians to savour the moment after the nation sealed a third consecutive World Cup appearance with a nervy 1-0 win over Iraq.
At a post-match presser the German was in no mood for detailed analysis of the game that saw the Socceroos come close to handing their World Cup destiny to Oman who play later tonight.
Instead, Osieck was full of thanks to the players, football organisers and fans – describing qualification to Brazil 2014 as a “beautiful feeling” and a moment he was “proud to be a part of”.
There were a lot of positives to take from the match, he said, and it was “not the time for any analysis or game critics.”
The Socceroos face a tough year ahead but tonight it was their “right and privilege to enjoy our qualification," Osieck added.
The coach made special mention of FFA chief Frank Lowy, praising his contribution to the Australian game.
He also expressed his "heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to the boys who did really well in the final stage of the campaign. I think it was a great effort.
“We really grew together to a team, cementing ourselves as a unit, and the reward today was that we could qualify for the World Cup.
“I’m equally happy for the organisation, Football Austraia, all the guys who came to the stadium and supported us in big numbers tonight, all the people at home in front of their TV sets.”
The coach, whose tenure at the helm of the national team has been the subject of constant speculation following some sub par results, made the brave move of substituting Tim Cahill late in the game.
And the Socceroos talisman seemed less than happy as he left the field. But any acrimony was short lived, when his replacement Josh Kennedy scored the winner with a header on 83 minutes.
At the final whistle Cahill jumped on Osieck’s back as euphoria broke out throughout the packed stadium.
Later the New York Red Bulls star labelled the coach “a genius” for his substitution and for steering the team through a rocky qualification campaign.
“No player really wants to be taken off,” Osieck said later.
“(But) you could see after the game he was one of the happiest persons – he was even on my shoulders.”
The win means the Socceroos have won automatic qualification, along with Japan, in Group B to world football’s showpiece event in Brazil next year.
