SOCCEROOS coach Holger Osieck is ready to swing the axe on his underperforming squad after the side crashed to their fourth game without a win, their worst record since 2000.

A spectacular volley from Mark Bresciano wasn't good enough to outweigh two impressive Scotland goals and an unfortunate own goal by Socceroo debutant Jason Davidson, giving the home side a 3-1 win over Australia.
After the match, Osieck admitted his players had let him down by failing to grasp their chance to shine ahead of the next crucial qualifiers.
And he vowed to clean the deadwood from the teamsheet before next month's WCQ clash with Jordan, followed by games against Oman and Iraq.
"That was a performance I definitely won't accept," he told au.fourfourtwo.com. "We made some basic mistakes that we should not be doing.
"I definitely will draw my conclusion again from that. We couldn't close them down in midfield - when we won the ball, we gave it away too easily and then we had to run after them
"We played into their hands."
Osieck insisted the game day squad had been set up as a test for certain players - and the result had delivered a clear message.
"I considered it a very good test to check on some individuals - and I got it, what I wanted to see...or let's say, what I DIDN'T want to see," he said.
"I won't give you any names, but there are definitely going to be some changes."
Tim Cahill, Matt McKay, Matt Spiranovic and Jade North were among the names Osieck mentioned that are set for a recall when fit and ready.
He added: "I think there are lot of guys that had not been here that definitely will help the team in the upcoming qualifiers.
"I consider it a wake-up call and we have to improve a lot in order to be ready for the upcoming qualifiers.
"It's never good to lose but maybe it's come at the right time."
