Holman's brilliant attacking play was the highlight of a match which featured plenty of end to end action, but no goals to please the crowd of over 28,000.

The 27-year-old's journey from 'whipping boy' prior to last year's World Cup to one of the key players in the Australian side has continue to grow in momentum, with Osieck almost falling over himself in praise of the attacking midfielder's efforts against Serbia.

"I don't know about Brett's history before I came to Australia. I just saw him play in the World Cup against Ghana and I liked what I saw," Osieck said.

"When I came and took over, he was right away a starter for me from game one in Switzerland. He has really confirmed my expectation and my confidence and today again, he showed his value for his team.

"I'm very happy I have him in the team because he can play more positions, in the centre, up front. He can operate from the flanks. He has a great tactical awareness, he has the pace and he has the guts to really challenge.

"Brett is really exceptional. I like him very much, I must say,"

Holman's emergence looks a key plank in Osieck's quest to encourage generational change within the Socceroos as the so-called golden generation move towards retirement.

The key quality Osieck wants in his developing players, many of whom he has had a chance to test out against New Zealand and Serbia over the past few days.

"Maybe they were fringe players before, but I don't consider them fringe players now. Some of them have really proven themselves as being potential Socceroos with good quality and they will fit in very well," the coach said.

Rhys Williams, who played a half in Adelaide on Sunday and a half again against Serbia, is the sort of player Osieck says he will need to stay fit to help Australia through an arduous qualification campaign for the 2014 World Cup.

Osieck added: "Rhys is an excellent boy. He has a lot to offer. I like his very much and I used him as a right full back. We are not too well-staffed there. If anything should happen to Luke (Wilkshire) there's almost nobody behind."

"Rhys is someone who can play there. But he is so versatile, he can play centre-half, he can play holding midfield. In one of the next games, I may play him there."

Australia's next game is likely to be a friendly against Wales in August which will be the last match before the World Cup qualifiers start in September.

The draw for the World Cup qualifiers will be held in Brazil on July 30.
