The result was a huge personal triumph for German Osieck to beat his home nation on their home territory witth a side thrashed by Germany just a few months ago.

"I'm really proud of the boys," he told Fox Sports after the game. "They did a great job. [I'll have] probably one or two beers...but no more!"

Australia struggled in the first half and Germany's goal from Mario Gomez looked inevitable after the Socceroos were unable to maintain possession and resorted to physicality instead.

But they came out renewed in the second half and took the match to Germany, and were rewarded with a goal from Dave Carney after a neat one-two with Matt McKay.

Harry Kewell was brought down in the box just 100 seconds later to give Luke Wilkshire a spotkick to score the winner and Australia stood tall to keep their lead to the end.

Afterwards, Holger was grateful for the effort his boys showed in the second half and bolstering his reputation in his homeland.

"The only thing I said was thank you very much from bottom of my heart," said Osieck at full-time.

He revealed his half-time teamtalk just encouraged the Roos to face down the might of Die Mannschaft and take the game to them.

"We played from our structure pretty well, our set-up was good [but] when were in possession we gave the ball away too easily," he said.

"If we don't get a sequence  of passes together then we dont get a result. I told them to be more focused, more concentrated and dont give it away easily.

"There was an aggressive attitude and really upbeat - 'We can do that!"

He added: "[In the first half] we were a bit intimidated. But we are Australia - we dont have to be scared of them.

"I don't care what they say - I'm really happy about our performance particularly in the second half. It was a great performance.

"It's a reason to be proud."
