Holland coach Bert van Marwijk is having to cope with a lengthening injury list as he plans for the latest matches in his country's qualification campaign for the 2012 European Championships.
Captain Mark van Bommel is the latest player to join a lengthening injury list after pulling out of the qualifier against Hungary in Budapest on Friday with a right thigh injury.
The AC Milan midfielder will not travel with the rest of the Holland squad tomorrow as he has decided to undergo intensive treatment in a bid to be fit for the return fixture against Hungary at the Amsterdam ArenA on Tuesday.
Van Bommel told the Dutch federation website, www.knvb.nl: "It is annoying but harmless. We have made every effort for Friday's game. That did not work.
"The fact that I am staying with the group indicates that we hope for significant progress."
Coach Van Marwijk, who is not expected to call up a replacement for Van Bommel, was already without goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, winger Arjen Robben, forward Klaas Jan Huntelaar and midfielder Theo Janssen to face Hungary on Friday.
Robben, who has not played for his country since they lost the World Cup final to Spain last summer, pulled out of the squad after suffering a groin strain for Bayern Munich at the weekend.
Huntelaar leads the scoring charts in qualifying with eight goals but will miss out with a knee problem.
FC Twente's Janssen will also be out with a similar complaint.
Luuk de Jong, Jeremain Lens and Ruud van Nistelrooy have been brought in as replacements for Janssen, Robben and Huntelaar.
NAC Breda goalkeeper Jelle ten Rouwelaar was brought in after Stekelenburg broke his thumb while training with club side Ajax.
Group E leaders Holland know victory in both games against Hungary, who go into the first game in second in the standings and three points behind their opponents, would go a long way to helping them reach the finals in Poland and Ukraine next summer.
