SOCCEROO James Holland still hopes to make Australia's final World Cup squad but will see his South Africa experience as an investment for Brazil 2014 if he does miss the cut.
To see the Roos train in South Africa...
The 21-year-old AZ Alkmaar midfielder is one of Australia's youngest squad members in South Africa and having captained the Young Socceroos at last year's under-20's World Cup in Egypt is considered a key player for the future.
Australia boss Pim Verbeek has already indicated it's unlikely he'll include Holland and fellow youngster Tommy Oar in his final 23-man World Cup squad, but the former Newcastle Jets man wants to make the most of his experiences in South Africa.
"I want to be in the starting XI in four years time and I've got a lot of work to do," Holland told the Newcastle Herald.
"I don't want to go to Brazil as an experience, I'll use this as a good experience and I'll push until Pim gives me the final verdict to give myself every chance.
"I can't look too far ahead yet, but it (2014 World Cup) does cross your mind."
The Sydney-born midfielder was considered a surprise selection on the plane to South Africa and he holds some hope of making the final cut.
"It's football, so anything's possible," Holland said. "Obviously I'd never wish for anyone to get injured but there is a chance that I might get a chance so we'll have to wait and see. You never say never."
Beyond the World Cup, Holland believes first-team opportunities at AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch Eredivisie might be forthcoming next season after settling into life in Europe.
He added: "This season I'm going to get more of an opportunity, as they have given me the last 14 months to get myself adjusted, they're happy with me.
"The first six months were tough adjusting and I obviously wasn't playing in the first-team, but last year has been really good and particularly in the last six months."
Holland, who spent most of the campaign with AZ's Jong team, made a late-season first-team appearance in a friendly against Celtic, while he was also included in the matchday squad in an April fixture against NEC Nijmegen.
The hard-working Australian added he felt he wasn't far from making his breakthrough.
"The last two and a half years have been a roller-coaster, but I've really enjoyed it and I guess hard work pays off," he said.
"I believe if you work hard you'll reap the rewards, and so far it's worked out well for me."
