Six teams comprising of homeless and marginalised players representing Victoria Metro, Victoria Regional, Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, and Western Australia played off against each other at Brisbane's South Bank, on the edge of the Brisbane River.

In stark contrast to the 2008 championships, played at Docklands on a bitterly cold Melbourne winter's day, Brisbane turned on its best wintry warmth, with players and spectators alike peeling off layers and seeking shade to keep cool.

It was a tall ask for the players, given that street soccer comprises of two seven-minute halves played at blistering pace between two teams of four on a pitch roughly the size of a tennis court. With no out of bounds, the ball is always live, and players sub on and off the court through the goal nets. It can lead to hairy moments, including ones where goalmouths are left open as goalkeepers swap out and opposing teams take aim.

After going through the competition undefeated, Victoria Metro street soccer team, hailing from 2008 Homeless World Cup host city Melbourne, proved too strong for the other states. They were crowned national street soccer champions after defeating New South Wales 7-2 in the grand final.

Host state Queensland finished fourth, after being defeated by Western Australian in the third-place play off, with Victoria Regional defeating South Australian in the play off for fifth.

The competition also doubles as a selection round for the national team, the Street Socceroos. Players selected for the national team based on their skills and attitude will be announced later this week and will travel to Milan in September to represent Australia in the 2009 Homeless World Cup.
