Two goals surrendered meekly inside the first eight minutes proved to be decisive as Celtic slumped to defeat in their Group D opener, the reverse even more disappointing as a notoriously poor away record in the competition continued without much of a fight.

The 2-0 loss has also succeeded in quashing the high spirits which followed last week's 5-0 thrashing of Inverness, as Celtic overtook Rangers at the top of the Premier League for the first time this season.

The focus now returns to domestic duties and Vennegoor of Hesselink admits Celtic have no option but to right the wrongs of Donetsk when they travel to Easter Road on Sunday.

He said: "We hadn't lost a game this season, that was the first game, and let's hope it's one of the only defeats we are going to get.

"The focus is now on the league on Sunday because it's another hard away game. That's football.

"The one day you lose but you can take revenge very quickly in the next game."

He added: "The feeling could be better of course but we have an important game at the weekend. The league is our focus again because we want to win it.

"We have to take the defeat and stand up again. It was the first game in the group stage and there will be many more. It was a little bit disappointing but that's football."

The last meeting between the two clubs ended in a 2-1 victory for Hibs in Edinburgh, with Scott Brown on the scoresheet for the home side having already agreed his £4.4million summer move to Celtic.

Vennegoor of Hesselink predicts another exciting tussle this weekend - but a different outcome.

"We lost the last game there but we want to stay top of the league so we have to win," he said.

"They are a good footballing side, I like to watch them play.

"I hope they play good football but we win. We showed some good football in the last few games in the league and scored some good goals and I hope that form continues."

As for the lingering memory of Donetsk, lessons will be learned in the weeks and months ahead according to the big Dutchman.

"It's a learning experience," he said.

"We are a young team and we have to take things a step at a time.

"We made some mistakes and we have to learn from that and take it into the next game. We have to play five more Champions League games and hopefully more after that.

"You learn every time and hopefully we will take something from that."
