Newcastle United's James Troisi will start for the Olyroos in tomorrow night's vital Olympic qualifier against group leaders Saudi Arabia in Damman.
Coach Rob Baan confirmed earlier today he intends to use Troisi on the left of midfield. "He's adapted very well. You expect someone who's playing for an English Premier League club to be physical and he is, even though he's tiny.
He usually plays just in behind the strikers but I've got Bridgey [Mark Bridge] in that spot, so he'll play as a wide midfielder on the left."
Australia currently lie one point behind Group D leaders Sau di Arabia despite winning 2-0 against the same opponent a fortnight ago. With three of the six rounds played the Saudis are on six points, Australia on five with Iran and Jordan both on two points.
Baan added that strikers Nathan Burns and Bruce Djite both arrived late into camp and were tired, "but travelling business class definitely has helped them recover." Sydney FC's Nikolai Topor Stanley is under an injury cloud going into tomorrow night's game while Mark Milligan has been sent home with a back injury.
"It's not too hot right now and we'll be playing in the evening, so the conditions will be better for us. We won't change too much our style, we'll keep them away from our half."
Baan also confirmed that a scout had been sent to the other group game tomorrow, the vital Jordan versus Iran clash.
The Dutch-born coach revealed there had been problems gaining releases for both Matthew Spiranovic and Kaz Patafta from their respective European clubs. Baan said that he aims to speak to Spiranovic's Nuremburg coach as he is known to him from his days coaching in Holland.
"It's important that we have personal contact with these clubs," said Baan of the problems.
Australia will play their final home group match at Adelaide ’s Hindmarsh Stadium on May 16 against Iran .The top two teams will progress to the third and final stage of qualifying, where 12 nations will be split into three groups.
"We have our destiny in our own hands," added Baan. "But this will be a much more difficult game than the one in Adelaide."
