Fondyke, 21, left Glory straight after the 2010-11 A-League season for Scotland, where he has trialled with top flight St Mirren for the past 10 weeks, before linking up with second tier Ayr United this week.

The Australian Institute of Sport product remains in discussions with the Saints and told au.fourfourtwo.com he believes the trial has gone well.

“It's been going good. I've been over here for four months now. I was at St Mirren for 10 weeks and hopefully I'll get something there,” Fondyke said.

“My agent is in talks with them now but I'm keeping my options open. I'm at Ayr United now, just having a look.”

He added: “I was at St Mirren for a long time so they are obviously interested but things can turn around quickly so that's why I'm keeping my options open.

"But I'm hoping within the next two weeks I'll have something on the table.”

The Scottish Premier League kicks off in a little over a fortnight which means a decision is likely to come soon.

However, Fondyke said his focus was on finding a club where he could get regular game time in the first-team as there is no reserve league in Scotland.

“I want to play first-team football, that's the most important thing,” he said. “Maybe if I go to St Mirren, if I'm not in the team on the Saturday then I'd miss out on game time.

“If I go to a division one side I might have the chance to play week-in week-out First Division football which would benefit me more.”

The 21-year-old added the move came about due to his desire to head overseas and the trial was organised thanks to Glory's Scottish connection.

“Back in Perth I was there for three years and I thought I wanted to get out and go overseas,” Fondyke said.

“My agent is Steven McGarry's agent, so he organised that I'd come over here. It all happened pretty quickly after the A-League season.”

Aaron Mooy is another young Australian who is currently contracted with St Mirren and Fondyke said having him around had helped him settle in with the playing group.

“It was good to have another Aussie boy there as well. I've never been to Scotland before so it really did help,” Fondyke said.

Despite being so far away from home, Fondyke recently bumped into former Melbourne Victory coach Ernie Merrick on the main street in Glasgow and had a chuckle at the chance meeting.

“That was strange. Ernie Merrick was just walking down the middle of Glasgow and I said 'hi' and had a chat,” Fondyke laughed.

“It was good, he remembered me from my Glory days, it was good to catch up with someone from Australia.”
