HULL City’s Richard Garcia says despite a desperate battle to stay in the English Premier League, his club has given him 100 percent support for his Aussie World Cup dream.
To see today's training session...
Garcia, 27, has impressed in training this week for Australia and a spot on Pim Verbeek's teamsheet for next Wednesday's World Cup qualifier with Uzbekistan appears a good possibility - particularly as Mark Bresciano has still not trained fully with the squad.
The attacking midfielder is hoping to add to his three appearances in the green and gold and he comes with the blessing of manager Phil Brown. Hull sit in 13th spot just four points from the drop zone in the English Premier League but that hasn't worried the Geordie boss.
"He [Brown] is always happy for the guys to go away on international duty. It's another experience for players, it's something different and I think it enhances everyone's game," Garcia said today.
"You're playing against different players from around the world so he's [Brown] more than happy for us to go away. He was the one who was pushing for me to get into the spotlight and push for a national team selection.
"Last season he was more than encouraging and it's continued this season."
Garcia admitted he felt his chance of national team selection had passed him by before he was spotted by Verbeek's assistant Henk Duut last season playing for the Tigers in the Championship.
"There have been times when I thought it was never going to happen. But I've worked really hard to get back to where I want to be," he said.
"It was always my aim to play for Australia and play in the Premier League. And I'm happy to have achieved it."
Garcia debuted last August against South Africa and looms as one player who could step up and make a starting spot his own.
A strong World Cup campaign for South Africa 2010 puts him in pole position to take over Brett Emerton's attacking midfield role for the Brazil 2014 campaign.
The former West Ham youth has two more seasons left on his contract at City but said he'd definitely want to come back to Australia at some point.
He added: "I went to England when I was 15 so I've never had a chance to play in front of the family. It's something I've always dreamt of doing, playing in front of friends and family."
