Germany centre-back Mats Hummels says his miss against South Korea in their World Cup group decider will haunt him.
South Korea provided the shock of Russia 2018 so far when they downed the Germans 2-0 in stoppage time in Kazan Arena on Thursday morning.
Hummels had the chance to make it 1-0 to Germany in the 87th minute after Mesut Ozil whipped in a cross, however the ball came off the Bayern Munich man’s shoulder and missed the goal.
“We had enough chances to score, I had a big chance to score and I had to score this one,” Hummels said post-match.
“This chance will haunt me for a few weeks.
“It hit my shoulder, so maybe I wasn’t in the right position, maybe I wanted to put too much pressure on the ball.
“There were three or four big chances and we didn’t score in the South Korea or Mexico game and this isn’t good enough.”
It was Germany’s first exit in the opening round in 80 years and they finished bottom of Group F.
Hummels said he couldn’t put his finger on why they failed in Russia.
“I can’t really explain what we did wrong, there were a few things in the Mexico game we did wrong,” he said.
“I think we did things better in the last two games. I don’t know exactly why we didn’t play the way we wanted to play.
“There was no game where we can say we played the style we used to play and expected to play, so we have to be disappointed in ourselves.”
