The Spanish champions have been chasing Huntelaar for the last two years and agreed a deal with Ajax for the 25-year-old yesterday that could rise to 27million euros.

Huntelaar is set to be officially presented as a Madrid player tomorrow after the club's medical staff declared him to be "fit for sporting practice" following his recent ankle injury.

Calderon believes the Holland international can make the difference to a Madrid side who have slipped six points behind leaders Barcelona in the midst of an injury crisis which has sidelined, amongst others, striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

"Huntelaar brings all the characteristics that we need at the moment," he told Telemadrid. "Moreover, he is young and talented.

"Those in charge of the sporting side of things signed him with the idea of keeping him in the future, that he should be with us for five or six years.

"He is 25. Everyone knows that he is a great striker."

Huntelaar arrived in Madrid this morning before successfully undergoing a medical in the afternoon.

The former Heerenveen striker, who is set to pen a four-and-a-half-year deal, told www.realmadrid.com: "It's a dream come true.

"I'm a bit tired because these past two days have been very long. Even so, I feel very good.

"Real Madrid are giving me security. They haven't only been showing me attention now, they've done so in the past."

When asked what the Madrid fans can expect of him following his arrival in the Spanish capital, Huntelaar vowed to start banging in the goals.

"I like playing near the goal, scoring goals and playing with people around me," he continued. "It's the same to me to score with my foot or my head.

"I like scoring goals.

"These past few days have been a bit chaotic. I have not yet thought really about what I hope to achieve.

"The only thing I have thought of up until now has been signing for Real Madrid, but of course I want to win trophies in this shirt.

"We'll see what happens in the next few days."

Huntelaar was expected to be out for at least six weeks with an ankle injury suffered on November 9, but Madrid's medical staff today claimed he had fully recovered.

"The relevant tests have revealed that Huntelaar is a footballer fit for sporting practice," said Carlos Diez, head of the club's medical team. "He is in optimum condition.

"The recovery period from the injury that sidelined him is over."

The news means that the the Holland striker should be officially presented tomorrow at the Bernabeu at 13.00 local time.

Huntelaar will link up with five of his compatriots at Madrid, with Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben, Rafael van der Vaart, Royston Drenthe and Van Nistelrooy all at the Primera Liga giants.

Calderon, who reiterated his backing for under-fire coach Bernd Schuster, has promised more big-name signings to come.

"In the winter there will be two signings which will really excite the fans," he said. "But that's all I'm going to say.

"There's no reason to think that Schuster is not the right coach to take this team to good things.

"As president I will fight tirelessly for him to stay. We're not going to sack him and we hope he won't leave."
