Socceroos skipper Mile Jedinak’s bid to return from a groin injury has been derailed by illness.
Jedinak narrowly missed out on Australia selection for the upcoming 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Japan and Thailand due to the groin injury which required surgery in the off-season.
The Australian midfielder trained all last week but wasn’t fit enough to return for Aston Villa in their weekend Championship clash with Norwich, nor their midweek cup clash with Wigan.
Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou confirmed Jedinak needed to play prior to his final selection decision in order to be considered.
Postecoglou announced his final 23-man squad on Wednesday, revealing Jedinak withdrew his own name from selection.
Jedinak has played seven of Australia's eight third round 2018 World Cup qualifiers, scoring three goals. The game he missed was due to injury, with Australia winning 1-0 away to UAE.

Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce had hoped Jedinak would be available to return in Saturday morning’s (AEST) Championship clash with Bristol City, but illness has intervened.
Jedinak missed training on Thursday and is unlikely to play against Bailey Wright’s Robins.
“He’s reported in sick,” Bruce said.
“We’ll see how he is. I doubt he’ll be right for Friday.”
Jedinak hasn’t played for Villa since April and missed Australia’s Confederations Cup campaign, although he played a full game against Saudi Arabia in June.
Villa last weekend against Norwich recorded their first league win without Jedinak in their starting line-up, since signing him in August last year.
