AUSTRALIA will face surprise competition from Indonesia to host the 2018 World Cup.
FIFA confirmed that the country is one of six nations to have registered formal expressions of interest in bidding for the 2018 or 2022 tournaments.
The other five are a joint bid by Spain/Portugal plus Russia, England Japan and Qatar.
Australia, Belgium/Holland and possibly the USA and Mexico are also likely to register bids before Monday's deadline.
FIFA announced last month there would be a simultaneous bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, though a country will not be considered for 2022 if their continent is hosting 2018.
A decision will be made on both World Cups in December 2010.
