MATTHEW Leckie’s hopes of earning a Socceroo call up have been dealt a blow after he was forced off injured in the 36th minute of FSV Frankfurt’s 2-0 victory over Ingolstadt.
According to his club’s website, Leckie complained of severe pain after being hit in the back while blocking a free kick. The severity of the injury is not yet clear.
Elsewhere in Germany, Robbie Kruse played 83 minutes and made two assists as Fortuna Dusseldorf defeated Ausburg 2-0.
The first of Kruse’s assists came in the 68th minute, when he won an aerial duel and headed the ball down to Dani Schahin, who fired a stunning long range shot into the back of the net.
Kruse set up the second of Schahin’s goals when he delivered a cross from the right flank into the box.
The Socceroo striker was delighted with the result and said: “To start with three points away is always great. I think at the start we were a little bit nervous, but I think the second half was an outstanding display.”
Meanwhile, in the 2. Bundesliga, Nikita Rukavytsya returned from injury and played 73 minutes as Hertha Berlin defeated SSV Jahn Regensburg 2-1.
In the 3rd Liga, Mustafa Amini was an unused substitute as Borussia Dortmund II lost 3-0 to Kickers Offenbach.
In the Eredivise, Adam Sarota made his third successive start and played the first 61 minutes of FC Utrecht’s 1-1 draw with PEC Zwolle. Tommy Oar was an unused substitute and Michael Zullo was out injured. Jason Davidson returned to the starting lineup and played a full match as Heracles Almelo lost 2-1 to Feyenoord.
In the Russian Premier League, Luke Wilkshire was absent because of injury as Dinamo Moscow earned their first points of the season with a 3-2 win over Lokomotiv Moscow.
In the English Premier League, Chris Herd started and played 59 minutes while Brett Holman came on after the break as Aston Villa were defeated 3-1 by Everton.
Mark Schwarzer put in a full shift as Fulham lost 3-2 against Manchester United, while the match between Adam Federici’s Reading and Sunderland was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. Brad Jones was an unused Substitute during the 2-2 draw between Liverpool and Manchester City.
In the Championship, Rhys Williams’ Middlesbrough held off a late surge from Mile Jedinak’s Crystal Palace to secure a 2-1 victory. Both Williams and Jedinak put in full shifts, but Scott McDonald was not in the squad.
Massimo Luongo started and played 65 minutes as Ipswich Town were demolished 6-0 by league leaders Blackpool.
Shane Lowry put in a full shift as Millwall lost 2-1 against Sheffield Wednesday, but Patrick Kisnorbo was an unused substitute as Leeds United defeated Peterborough 2-1. Neil Kilkenny was absent from the match day squad because of a back injury as Bristol City defeated Cardiff 2-1.
In League One, Bailey Wright and Shane Cansdell-Sheriff both played 90 minutes as Preston North End drew 1-1 with AFC Bournemouth.
Alex Cisak played a full match and gave away a penalty as Oldham Athletic lost 1-0 to Stevenage. Some calamitous defending from James Tarkowski exposed Cisak and left him with no option but to bring down Marcus Haber inside the box.
Dean Bouzanis was an unused substitute and James Wesolowski was absent because of a torn hamstring.
In the Scottish Premier League, Ryan McGowan played a full match as Hearts fought out a goalless draw with Aberdeen. Meanwhile, Jackson Irvine was an unused substitute during Celtic’s 4-2 win over Inverness.
In the Austrian Bundesliga, James Holland put in a full shift as Austria Wien climbed to the summit of the league table with a 2-0 win over Wacker Innsbruk.
In Portugal, Caleb Patterson-Sewell played a full match between the posts as 10-man Vitoria Setubal was trounced 5-0 by Benfica, while, in Greece, Apostolis Giannou came on in the 67th minute of PAOK’s 1-0 win over Panthrakikos.
In the J-League, Alex Brosque started and played 81 minutes as Shimizu S-Pulse lost 2-0 to Urawa Reds. Jade North and Josh Kennedy were out injured as Consadole Sapporo lost 7-2 to Gamba Osaka and Nagoya Grampus defeated Kawasaki Frontale 1-0.
In the K-League, Luke DeVere did not play because of a hamstring injury as Gyeongnam secured their spot in the top eight with a 2-1 win over Gwangju. The injury came at the worst possible time for DeVere, who was expected to be called up for the Socceroos’ matches against Lebanon and Jordan in September.
Eddy Bosnar scored a stunning long range free kick as Suwon Bluewings drew 1-1 with Seongnam. Brendan Hamill came on in the 58th minute.
Robbie Cornthwaite also got his name on the score sheet as Chunnam defeated Gangwon 4-3, while Matt McKay played the full 90 minutes of Busan’s goalless draw with Sangju.
Former Central Coast Mariners defender Alex Wilkinson put in a full shift as Jeonbuk drew 1-1 with Ulsan, while Adrian Madaschi was suspended for Jeju United’s goalless draw with Incheon.
In Uzbekistan, David Carney did not feature in Bunyodkor’s 0-0 draw with Nasaf.
In the Chinese Super League, Joel Griffiths played the full 90 minutes of Shanghai Shenhua’s 3-3 draw with Shandong Luneng, and Dino Dulbic put in a full shift as Guizhou Renhe defeated Qingdao Jonoon 1-0.
On Sunday morning, James Troisi made his debut for Atalanta, coming on in the 67th minute of the 1-0 loss to Lazio, while Eli Babalj was an unused substitute in Red Star Belgrade’s 2-1 win over Novi Pazar.
