Diego Milito's goal five minutes before half-time was all the Nerazzurri needed to beat Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

Inter coach Jose Mourinho led the side to last year's scudetto in his first season in charge and is now within touching distance of a treble with the league title and Champions League still to be decided.

In a rare show of humility after the game, Mourinho said: "Am I the man of the moment? No. It's Inter that is the squad of the moment."

Roma are also the team that Inter are attempting to put away in the Serie A title race. Mourinho's side have a two-point lead with two games remaining.

They also have a date with Bayern Munich in the Champions League final later this month in Madrid, a city that Mourinho is being linked with after the campaign. Real Madrid are reportedly courting the Portuguese tactician, who has yet to say if he intends on honouring the remainder of his contract.

"This is a team that in any case, whoever guides it, will do well," he said. "Are there any possibilities that I remain? Yes."

Inter fans will not be happy to see Mourinho go if he can lead the club to two more trophies this season.

"With regards to the scudetto, we will do our duty until the end," Mourinho said.

"As I have said many times for us the Champions League should be a dream, not an obsession."

Roma coach Claudio Ranieri has done wonders with the Giallorossi this season. No one expected them to push Inter in the scudetto race and they were not at their best tonight.

"Unfortunately, we took a while to get into motion and evidently, we felt a lot of pressure going into this game," Ranieri said.

"We were only condemned by an episode but we were not able to play our style of game as we had done at the San Siro back in April (when Roma beat Inter 2-1).

"They punished us and we have to honour the winner.

"But we will not give up in the race for the scudetto.

"We will try with all our strength."

As is so often the case when Roma play in a big game, their captain Francesco Totti left an imprint. On this occasion, it was bad.

Totti, who is rumoured to be considering a return to the Italy squad for the World Cup, came on as a second-half substitute and was booked twice, the second yellow card came for a bad foul on Mario Balotelli late in the game.

"We didn't make the most of our counter-attacks but fortunately, Roma in the end lost their heads," Mourinho said.

Ranieri has spoken of the need for Totti to play with more self control in recent games.

He repeated that sentiment tonight.

"It was a foul that came out of frustration," he said. "But he should not have done it."

Roma host Cagliari on Sunday while Inter take on Chievo at the San Siro.
