Internazionale 2 Roma 2 (Inter win 8-7 on penalties)
Jose Mourinho claimed his first trophy as manager of Internazionale as they won a penalty shoot-out to claim the Italian Super Cup against Roma on Sunday night.
On a dramatic night at the San Siro, Roma twice came from behind to take the game to extra time.
Sulley Muntari had put Inter ahead with a debut goal in the 18th minute before Daniele De Rossi stunned the home crowd with an emphatic equaliser in the 59th minute.
Substitute Mario Balotelli restored Inter's advantage seven minutes from time, but that was not enough to seal the win as Mirko Vucinic equalised in the last minute.
That was not the end of the drama as the game went to a shoot-out after the teams remained locked during extra time.
Roma captain Francesco Totti then had the chance to win the game in the shoot-out, but he wasted the chance when he blasted his spot-kick against the crossbar.
And when Juan missed his penalty moments later, Javier Zanetti stepped up to coolly slot home and give Mourinho the perfect start to his reign.
Mourinho took his place on the bench in the San Siro for the first time since replacing triple-Scudetto winner Roberto Mancini this summer.
He named Zlatan Ibrahimovic in his team despite complaints from the Swedish Football Association that the forward could not be fit having pulled out of the national team on Wednesday, and he was soon showing his full array of skills.
He danced past Philippe Mexes into the penalty area, wriggling past another Roma defender before pulling his short just inches wide of the post.
He just missed the other post after attempting to divert Luis Figo's cross towards goal minutes later and he was involved in the build-up to the opening goal in the 18th minute.
Maicon received Ibrahimovic's pass at the right-hand side of the penalty area and his low cross deflected off the knee of Mexes onto the crossbar.
The French defender may have been relieved to have avoided an own goal, but he would not have been so happy to see the ball rebound out to Muntari, who had no problems slamming the ball in with his left foot.
Zanetti tested Doni from distance as the home said maintained the pressure on Roma, who were struggling to get out of their own half.
The closest they could get to Inter's goal was 25 yards, but that was close enough for De Rossi.
John Arne Riise's shot from a similar distance was headed clear by Nicolas Burdisso to De Rossi, who needed just two touches before the ball was rippling the back of the net, flying past Julio Cesar's hand in an instant.
Mourinho's confident demeanour turned to a worried expression as Roma took control of the game and possession.
Only the entry of 18-year-old Balotelli tipped the scales back in Inter's favour, and he put them ahead within minutes of coming on, benefiting from a misjudgement by Mexes to latch onto Julio Cesar's long punt forward and coolly lift the ball over Doni.
Roma coach Luciano Spalletti took his final throw of the dice by introducing Totti and sending everybody forward, and like Mourinho with Balotelli, his adventurous gamble was rewarded.
Vucinic met a corner from the left with his head and sent the ball towards goal with a deflection off Dejan Stankovic taking the ball into the top corner and forcing extra time.
Balotelli had all of the chances in extra time, but he could not get the goal to give the Nerazzurri the win, meaning penalties were required to separate the teams.
Dejan Stankovic's penalty was pushed onto the crossbar by Doni, but Totti blasted his decisive spot-kick on to the crossbar to add to the drama and force sudden death.
Juan's miss allowed Inter captain Zanetti to seal the win, and he kept his cool to clinch the Super Cup and make it a winning start for Mourinho.
