Sydney-born Ireland, 22, penned a one-year deal with the Sky Blues last week following the departure of previous number one Keiren Westwood to Sunderland.

Ireland, who injured his thigh in his league debut for the Sky Blues against Bristol City in March, now has the opportunity to become first choice at Coventry.

However, the young stopper will miss pre-season and won't be fit until September due to the thigh injury he suffered on his league debut which Coventry goalkeeping coach Steve Ogrizovic revealed he's still struggling to overcome.

“We mustn’t forget Danny Ireland who was really unfortunate to get injured last season when he got his opportunity when Keiren (Westwood) got injured,” Orgizovic told the Coventry Telegraph.

“He suffered a torn thigh muscle and people perhaps don’t realise that he carried on for 40 minutes with that so he deserves some recognition for that alone.

"He’s had an operation and he is going to be fit around September time so we will have three good goalkeepers who will create competition between each other and that’s the way goalkeepers develop.”
