Irvine could get the chance to play his first Socceroos game in his hometown when Australia, ranked 42 in the world go up against world No.1 Brazil at the MCG on Tuesday night.

The 24-year-old has 10 caps for the Socceroos and was substituted in the 63rd minute for Robbie Kruse in the 3-2 World Cup Qualifying win over Saudi Arabia in Adelaide on Thursday night.

Irvine said in his time under coach Ange Postecoglou, the aim was to change the mentality that the Socceroos were minnows when it came to playing world class opposition.

“One of the biggest things the boss tried to instil in this squad over my time is that belief, and change of mindset that we’re not little Australia competing against these nations,” Irvine said.

“We need to believe that we're capable of competing at this level, if we ever want to become a world class nation.

“We’ve got some incredible young players in this squad and a wealth of experience. That change of mindset, to believe we can’t just compete but go and beat these teams, is definitely something that’s been instilled in us over the last couple of years.

“We’re aware many countries are always going to face criticism because people expect the best, that’s what we go out to provide. The one thing we’ll always get from the squad is 100 per cent commitment, desire and passion.”

Brazil fell 1-0 to Argentina in a friendly at the MCG on Friday night, with the possession stat 61-39 in favour of Lionel Messi’s side.

Irvine pointed to the 2-1 loss to England at the Stadium of Light in May last year - where the Soccceroos had 55% of the ball - to show Australia could play their possession based game against top opposition.

"We out-possessed England in England, people seem to forget those things as well but we know we’re capable of playing a possession based game against the best,” he said.

“We’ve done it in the past and again we’re aware it’s going to be difficult. We’ll always try play our possession based game and try take it to the opposition and be positive, that’s something that’s been instilled in us.”
