SOCCEROOS coach Holger Osieck says Australia needs to use Friday's unconvincing 2-1 victory over Thailand as a "wake-up" call for the rest of their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Australia made hard work of Thailand, ranked 98 places below the Socceroos, with a come-from-behind win at Suncorp Stadium.
Osieck was clearly disappointed with the performance of his side and hinted he let the players have it after the full-time whistle.
“Maybe it was a good wake-up call. We got away with one black eye and now we have to look forward,” Osieck told Fox Sports.
“I don't want to have to discuss it any further. I think I was critical enough what I said. Now we have to look forward. We have a long trip to Saudi Arabia and it's going to be a tough game again in difficult circumstances.”
The Socceroos too often resorted to predictable long diagonal balls from the flanks for Tim Cahill and Joshua Kennedy in the first-half, before coming from behind to eventually get the three points with substitute Alex Brosque netting an 86th-minute winner.
“Our boys in the first-half didn't play the football I would like,” Osieck said. “There were a lot of square balls.
"Sometimes we drove the ball through our midfield with too many touches so it was easy for them to regroup.
“We made the mistake in midfield where we got caught on the counter (for Thailand's goal). You could see with these guys who rely on their fighting spirit and their commitment, then they gained confidence.”
Osieck added: “At half-time we got it straight. In the second-half we did a lot more. The boys they knew what they had to do. Basically we played the entire second-half in their half.”
However the German tactician admitted the combination of Cahill and Kennedy failed to function, with the former replaced just past the hour mark.
“Tim and Josh they played a similar type of football. They were too close together, everybody was waiting for the cross, and the crosses didn't have the quality we normally have,” Osieck said.
“The two best headers more or less neutralised themselves. It wasn't very beneficial for the team. Therefore I decided to take Tim off and leave Josh on.
“We then had more attacking options in the attacking third as we had more mobility up there. It paid off. I'm happy Alex, who came on, scored the goal.”
