EXCLUSIVE: The banter between John Aloisi and Kevin Muscat has intensified ahead of the blockbuster Hyundai A-League major semi final second leg at the SFS this Sunday.
The in-form Sydney FC striker says his crucial goal in the first leg 2-1 loss in Melbourne a week ago was the result of a "stuff-up" from the Victory great.
Muscat had described the crucial goal - just minutes after Victory had taken a first half 2-0 lead - as a miscued effort from his former Socceroo teammate. But Aloisi is having none of that.
"It's funny that he's trying to deflect [blame] because he stuffed up a little bit there but I don't care how they go in as long as they go in," Aloisi told au.fourfourtwo.com at Sunday's launch of the Hyundai Goodwill Ball.
"But that was an important goal, the away goal so we'll see. Probably he's deflecting, I was happy, it was a right foot shot. So they can go anywhere! At least it was on target and lucky enough he got a touch on it and it went in."
Despite the score-line, Sydney's away goal looms large in the second leg. Many such games around the world hinge on what the team at home can get out of the first leg abnd Aloisi's effort - miscued or not - could well prove the difference in another fascinating encounter between these two bitter rivals.
"It's hard, 2-1's a lot better than 1-0. We scored the away goal which helps us a lot but they're still in the lead. They're still in the box seat," warned Aloisi.
"I don't think Melbourne can sit back. Their type of game is to go forward but we have to take the game to them like we did last time when we played them in Sydney - and it's exactly the same this time.
"We have to be wary of them on the break, they caught us two times on the break in Melbourne and scored. So it'll be much the same so we must concentrate at the back and score as many as we can.
Today Sydney FC will begin to ramp up their preparations for the biggest game in Sydney this season. Last week the pressure was taken off the sky blues with a lighter schedule.
By contrast, Victory were on a plane immediately after the first leg for a tough AFC Champions League encounter with Beijing Guoan. Victory returned empty handed from China, making Sunday's game even more crucial in their quest for success in 2010.
"Now the build up is going to happen," added Aloisi.
The former La Liga and Italian based striker is part of a billboard advertising campaign launched on Sunday that also features the image of Muscat. It should help ramp up the crowd to a season high for Sydney.
"It's a good time of the year for us and now we want to get a home grand final for our supporters," said Aloisi, whose scored in his last three games for the sky blues.
"All my focus is on winning games for Sydney FC and keeping my form up."
He added: "I've been happy since we came back from the little break we had in the New Year and physically it's been showing in the games."
