The 23-year-old joined the club on a record-breaking transfer and has not disappointed, helping his side to two wins from three attempts.

He has found the back of the net via headers on all occasions which has some comparing him to the great Tim Cahill.

“I have heard a couple of comments about that actually (Cahill) and I am getting compared to Josh Kennedy too,” Irvine said after arriving in Perth from the UK for the Socceroos clash with Iraq on Thursday..

Burton Albion sit in 13th place, far better than some experts had them placed this year, and Irvine wants to take them even higher.

“The club is sort of odds-on favourites to be relegated by the punters but we don’t see ourselves in that bracket,” Irvine said.

“We want to achieve some good things this year and to have taken seven points from the last nine gives us a platform going in to our other games.”

Burton paid a record $700,000 for Irvine to transfer out of Ross County in the Scottish Premiership where the fledgling Socceroo had made 36 appearances.

The midfielder said breaking the record hadn’t brought too many distractions.

He added: “Being a club record signing comes with its pressures but it also gives you a lot of confidence because it shows the faith they have in me.”
