The defender was there at the very start of the qualification journey to Beijing but while China beckons for 18 Olympians, Timpano's travel plans extend only as far as Sutherland on Thursday night.

Timpano was captain of the Olyroos squad when it began its long qualifying campaign but injury has all but wiped out the last two years of his career.

However, he now back in action and returned to John Kosmina's side for last week's goalless draw with Blacktown City Demons.

He is expected to get another run out against Sutherland this week.

He told sydneyfc.com: "It was good to get out there again I have been, you know I’ve played a few minutes here and there but haven’t got through a game comfortably and last week I pulled up pretty well.”

As for seeing his Olympic dreams shattered, Timpano says his focus is on club matters.

He said: "It is disappointing and it will be hard watching the boys while they’re there, but I’m just looking forward to having a good season with Sydney now.

“I’m only young, and if I stay healthy I can still be at the standard and level that I was before-hand, so I’ve got no sort of worries about my ability, and if I am fit I think I’ll be a strong member of the team.”

As for the Sutherland clash, John Kosmina believes it will be a good test for Timpano and company.

He said: "They’re a good side and their results so far this season prove that, they’ll provide a good measure of where we’re at and what we still need to do some work on."

Sutherland will include two rising stars pushing for places in Sydney’s National Youth League team.

Following the Sutherland friendly Sydney FC will have one more trial, against Many United next Wednesday.

Tickets for Thursday’s game can be purchased at the gate, with adult entry $5 and kids under 16 admitted free.
