EXCLUSIVE: The Socceroos may have lost 1-0 but Jade North said last night's China World Cup qualifiers was a big day for Indigenous Australia with two of its stars on the park for Australia.
North, 26, was joined by fellow Indigenous talent David Williams – a 64th minute substitute.
"It's just great for the Indigenous people. He's a great little player and obviously he's got a lot of talent," North told au.fourfourtwo.com.
"I was just so happy for him. I haven't quite managed to congratulate him but I will when I get back to the hotel.
"It's just good for us Indigenous guys to set the benchmark for younger kids coming up and be role models."
Other Indigenous talent is starting to make its mark in the national set up with Sydney FC's Mark Bridge and Travis Dodd of Adelaide United also gaining national representation over the last couple of seasons.
An ecstatic Williams told au.fourfourtwo.com that the night was "excellent" despite the loss. "I was happy to get my first cap. I was pumped."
Williams added that the 70,000 plus attendance was possibly the biggest crowd he's played in front of. And his instructions from coach Verbeek were simple.
"Before I went on Pim told me to stay wide and try to take on the player and work hard."
North described the nation's Indigenous sporting talent as something the FFA needs to tap into, saying "the talent's there, and there's certainly a lot of wasted talent I suppose.
"The interest is there – I mean look at tonight, there were around 70,000 here – it's just finding a way to tap into it."
As for North tapping into an overseas league, he said he was still a Jets player despite reported interest from Belgium.
"I've got one year on my contract left at the Jets. But if anything does pop up, I'm open."
