Can Australia claw its way out of a tricky group under Bert van Marwijk? Is the national team better suited to a pragmatic managerial approach? Did the Dutchman have enough time to implement his strategy? 

All are subjects of interest to Socceroos fans. 

However, with France the overwhelming favourites to top the group and Peru possibly our most beatable opponents, perhaps the most significant question from a progression standpoint rests on how Australia will fare against Denmark.

According to Adelaide United-bound Dane Michael Jakobsen, its going to take some serious luck for Australia to topple his homeland on the world stage.

"I think Denmark will beat Australia," the former Melbourne City defender told Jack Fitzgerald of FourFourTwo Australia.

"When I compare Australia and Denmark, quality wise I think Denmark are better.

"Sure, in one game of eleven v eleven, anything can happen - but if both teams play their best, I think Denmark wins this match 8 out of 10 ten times.

"Denmark initially struggled in qualification under a new manager but started to play much better towards the end - even beating Poland 4-0.

"I think Denmark and France will go through."

It's of little surprise that the Danes fancy themselves against Australia. 

The nation boasts one of the English Premier League’s top stars in Christian Eriksen, along with a team plying their trade in the top leagues of Europe.

But while this information may unsettle Socceroos fans hoping their nation will progress from Group C, all is not lost.

According to Jakobsen, Denmark have one major vulnerability that the Socceroos can capitalise on, as well as some serious injury concerns.

"I feel Jens Stryger is the weak link,: he said.

"A right back who starts on the left for the national team, which I don’t understand. Australia can probably exploit that.

"They’re also struggling with a lot of injuries at the moment, just two days ago (Niklas) Bendtner did his groin and is out for 2 to 4 weeks, our best defender Kjaer has been out for a lot of the season as well as key players like Cornelius, Bjelland and Kasper Schmeichel.

"But then again we have a player like Eriksen who is performing consistently at the highest level, a lot could depend on him.

Eriksen aside, Jakobsen warned Australia to be vigilant of young winger Pione Sisto who spent the first parts of his career at Danish club Midtjylland. 

Jakobsen even advised one of Australia’s own prodigies to model his career around Sisto, who now plays in La Liga for Celta de Vigo.

"Eriksen is obviously great, but Sisto is the one to watch," Jakobsen said

"I know they hype Arzani a lot here in Australia, but Sisto is Denmark’s creative player on the wing who can do the same as Arzani, just a bit better.

"If I was Arzani, Sisto would be a player whose career I’d look at.

"I’ve had chats with Daniel (Arzani) because he likes to see himself at a big club very quick.

"I tell him to take it easy, and like Sisto did - not rush."

As for why Jakobsen decided to join Adelaide United amid interest from other A-League clubs, the advice of outgoing Johan Absalonsen was the main selling point. 

"I was talking to other clubs both in Australia and back home, but Adelaide seemed right for me," he said.

"I had a good chat to Johan about Adelaide and he was very positive about everything.

"That for me is really important when deciding on a club, I was able to do the same with Thomas Sorensen before joining Melbourne City."

Still living in Melbourne, Jakobsen will re-locate to Adelaide and link up with his new teammates in a couple of weeks.

One Adelaide player who Jakobsen likely won’t see is Ersan Gulum, who allegedly has his heart set on returning to Melbourne.

"What I heard was that he wanted to go back to Melbourne, if that is to be the case, I think I’ll have a good partnership with Jordan Elsey," Jakobsen said.

"I’m looking forward to playing with Elsey, he’s a young guy with a lot of promise so hopefully I can give him some guidance."
