Tim Cahill might have received the spotlight for Melbourne City’s first trophy win, but spare a thought for Michael Jakobsen’s efforts.
Cahill’s goal was enough to get City over the line downing Sydney FC 1-0 at AAMI Park on Wednesday night, but it was a battle to the very end.
Jakobsen played out of his skins and saved City with 19 minutes remaining as Brazilian Bobo’s header beat goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis only to be denied by the Dane on the line.
“It might be the first time you saw it, but it won’t be the last time, I’ll do it again,” Jakobsen said after winning the FFA Cup.
“Sometimes it’s a bad idea because the offside line won’t be there anymore because I was standing on the line, so it can cause trouble sometimes, but it’s all about the instinct and how you feel about it.
“It’s my job, I said to the other guys ‘I’m a defender, we have to defend the goal' - all four defenders and the goalkeeper.
“I just thought ‘go on the line’, if something should pass Deano then I maybe have the chance to save it.
“It’s a final and everything, I’ve done it before, I have a tendency to stand on the line if there’s danger.”
And after captain Bruno Fornaroli claimed the Mark Viduka (Man of the Match award) post-game, Jakobsen was not short of humour on the Urugayan stealing the accolade and swearing on mic.
“I don’t care man (about not winning the medal),” he joked.
“This is a team effort, I’m not playing for my sake, to get an honour like that of course it’s nice, but Bruno’s man of the match and that’s fine with me.
“(His speech) was fine, struggling a bit with English but he’s getting better so it’s good.”
Jakobsen said the fact it was City’s first trophy made it even more special for his achievements as an individual.
“This one is a bit more special because it’s the first time for the club and this is really something we aim to achieve, it was very good,” Jakobsen said.
“This is very high on the ranking, it’s a cup final, we won a trophy so of course it’s going to be high on the list.
“High up in the games, I’ve played in Europe… Champions League and UEFA Cup and I’ve won the league back in Denmark but it’s high.”
